Importance of pace of play
One of the most frustrating things a golfer can experience is slow play on the course. Just think about it! You book a tee time 7 days out, you look forward to it all week while you’re grinding through your work week, and when your day finally arrives, WHAT??!! Tee times are delayed 15-20 minutes because things are moving slow! You finally tee off, and you’re waiting between every shot because the group in front of you is waiting for the group in front of them. You get to your first Par 3 and there is a group on the green and two others waiting. Nothing is more frustrating!
Pace of play is important for several reasons, but I thought this week I would share my two cents on why I feel like it impacts how much you’re going to enjoy your round:
1. Enjoyment: A timely round enhances the overall experience for players, reducing frustration and keeping the game enjoyable.
2. Course Management: Playing the proper tees for your handicap and ability will help minimize the loss of balls and time killing task of looking for them.
3. Flow of Play: Think about your execution as you’re approaching your ball. Then execute! Do not spend a lot of time standing over the ball and overthinking. Know what you’re capable of and accept the results.
4. Social Interaction: Faster play encourages more social interaction among players, fostering a friendly atmosphere. The more you enjoy the game, the more likely you’ll play again.
5. Player Retention: Slow play can deter newcomers and casual players, impacting the growth of the sport.
6. Etiquette: Adhering to pace of play norms reflects good sportsmanship and respect for fellow golfers. So be mindful and considerate of the other players on the course.
Overall, a proper pace of play contributes to a positive golfing environment for everyone involved. This includes golfers, rangers, and the staff in the clubhouse. So please be considerate, and keep it moving!
